The International Printing Museum is a wonderous cultural gem in Carson, California. When I was in high school, I had several semesters of graphic arts class where we learned how to do offset printing, from design and layout, photography, stripping flats and making plates to finally making prints. I considered a career in graphics and printing prior to selecting architecture as my major. The IMP has printing equipment from the 20th century going all the way back to the their (replica) Guttenberg press.
The day I visited coincided with a fall fair with demonstrations and a merchandise tent populated by small producers and artisans from around the country. It was heartening to see so many passionate fans of printed media and to better understand the engineering and craft behind the printed work.
