On a fall day in September 2005 I drove up to the Pacific Palisades to see the Eames House. I didn't realize that they prefer you make an appointment and pay for a tour, but they didn't kick me out either. We studied this house when I was in a college class on Construction Systems and it was nice to see it in person. I was less captured by its prefabricated tectonic logic and much more so thrilled by the textures of domesticity - stone and brick pavements, fallen leaves, spiderwebs and joyful graffiti. The contrast between machine logic and organic exuberance is a design lesson I have held close ever since.
